His Eye is on the Sparrow

About the project

This still life painting is one of my personal favourites.  I had the photo of the vase of crysanthemums and carnations (taken in Cartmel Fell Church) for a long time.  Sometimes an idea takes a while to formulate and so it was with this painting.  Once I had taken the right photo of a sparrow it all came together.

The title comes from a song which relates that even the smallest and weakest amongst us should be looked after and cherished.  I echoed the lyrics in the unfinished piece of embroidery.

The flowers were very detailed, especially the crysanthemums, but the background took the longest.  I used a pointillist technique to capture the transition from dark to light. The cheeky sparrow was a joy to paint and the ladybird added just the touch of colour it needed.
