Meet Joey, a beautiful greyhound. This photograph shows two important aspects of a excellent photo for me to work from: Joey’s personality which shines through, and beautfiul lighting.
I really enjoyed this painting. I spend a large amount of time simply painting his collar, and I just love those ears and those feet! Although this would have worked well as a simple portrait without a background, I wanted to do something more theatrical.
The finished painting is one of my personal favourites. I love the Romanesque stonemasonry at the bottom of the painting with the Latin name for ‘dog’ chiselled into it. This gave me the idea of calling it ‘The Mona Canina’, as Joey’s pose reminded me of the Mona Lisa (yes I know it takes a bit of imagination!). The blossom helps to continue the right-to-left flow of the painting, and a little fritillary butterfly just completed the bright and airy theme.
The Mona Canina has been framed in American white oak. The frame was hand-made in a contemporary style to go with modern feel of the painting.
